As a longtime advocate for sensible marijuana legislation I fully support ReformCA in their effort for cannabis policy reform in California. The prohibition experiment has proven itself to be a miserable failure once again. Alcohol prohibition was repealed because it empowered an underground market made up of violent criminals. which lead to an increase in crime, death and other prohibition-related harms.
It’s time to apply that thinking to cannabis. By making it a legal, regulated product, availability can be restricted to responsible adults, under-age use can be curtailed, the financial, as well as the human costs to society can be significantly reduced, while also removing massive profits from the black market criminal economy.
As the eighth largest economy in the world with the fifth largest unemployment rate in the U.S., California has an opportunity to send a powerful message to the world. By exchanging the $60 million dollar annual price tag to fight a failed war on cannabis, with a reformed cannabis policy which ends prohibition, California could join Colorado in creating thousands of new jobs in a sustainable, regulated legal industry that puts many dangerous drug cartels out of business.
